Del Mar Theater

Its situation at the end of Downtown Santa Cruz has been challenged by other contributors to this blog, but it is definitely centrally located on the main Drag of Pacific Avenue. The theater's exterior is a spectacle by day and night. It shows its recent, and very skillfully executed renovation with a big flashy sign full of clean/glammy neon. From what I could tell, the theater housed 3 or 4 smaller screens. We were in one that had a capacity of maybe 100-150. The sound and picture didn's show any indications of being outdated or failing. We watched riding Giants, and the big screen seemed to do the big waves due justice.

The interior does a really nice job of preserving the ornate features of the ceiling and wall decorations. It was very colorful and pretty impressive to take in. There was also this upstairs lounge that looked tragically underused. It was pretty large and furnished with nice leather sofas and small tables. It let in some pretty afternoon light, but looked like more of fun idea than a well used feature of the venue. It's too bad, since the couches were way nice. It's probably because there's already too much to eat and due around the theater give it's great location :)

The theater is part of a chain called Nickelodeon. The woman at the ticket office sold us our tickets at matinee prices even though it was a saturday. I love it when they cut you little breaks like that. It makes for better business. I told M. it was my new favorite theater!
