Ceiling Collapse at Marin Movie Theater

About 30 people were hurt in the collapse.

A ceiling collapsed at a Marin County movie theater Monday, sending three people to the hospital.
In all, about 30 people were hurt during an afternoon showing of "Garden State" at the Sequoia Theater in Mill Valley when the ceiling fell in. City inspectors were looking for a cause, but at least one patron said she felt moisture as well as falling plaster.
The 1929 Art Deco building was renovated five years ago and split into two theaters. It was the theatre on the north side where the ceiling collapsed.
The historic theater was closed Tuesday, and owners had not announced when they planned to reopen.

Del Mar Theater

Its situation at the end of Downtown Santa Cruz has been challenged by other contributors to this blog, but it is definitely centrally located on the main Drag of Pacific Avenue. The theater's exterior is a spectacle by day and night. It shows its recent, and very skillfully executed renovation with a big flashy sign full of clean/glammy neon. From what I could tell, the theater housed 3 or 4 smaller screens. We were in one that had a capacity of maybe 100-150. The sound and picture didn's show any indications of being outdated or failing. We watched riding Giants, and the big screen seemed to do the big waves due justice.

The interior does a really nice job of preserving the ornate features of the ceiling and wall decorations. It was very colorful and pretty impressive to take in. There was also this upstairs lounge that looked tragically underused. It was pretty large and furnished with nice leather sofas and small tables. It let in some pretty afternoon light, but looked like more of fun idea than a well used feature of the venue. It's too bad, since the couches were way nice. It's probably because there's already too much to eat and due around the theater give it's great location :)

The theater is part of a chain called Nickelodeon. The woman at the ticket office sold us our tickets at matinee prices even though it was a saturday. I love it when they cut you little breaks like that. It makes for better business. I told M. it was my new favorite theater!

Unhappy scones

"How do they even live with themselves? Sitting there all day, next to the corn cherry scones, knowing they're clearly inferior. Pity the plight of a mere strawberry scone."--A guy at Arizmendi bakery

The Bridge in SF

Bridge Theatre

No more than a stone throw from Mel's Diner on Geary (in case your family and friends care to get something to eat while you stand in line for the show)

We went to a sold out showing of Garden State (our movie) highlighted by the following

  • An enthusiastic crowd showing up early and lining up outside the building
  • People friendly enough to let me save a row of 6 seats that were empty until 2 minutes before show time
  • The warmest theater I've ever been in (enough to make me uncomfortable and change my shirt during the trailers)
  • Sweet sweet frozen drinks that totally make up for the temperature

The staff at the theater was really nice and (accurately) predicted the show would sell out and to come back early. Parking's a bit of a problem. But when your movie is only showing in one theater in town...

Le Video

In case we don't get around to seeing the 5,234,283 movies we have on our list in the movie theaters, there's always Le Video ! So great!

(Did we mention the late fees?)

Nearby sweets

The closest places for sweets in my current neighborhood:
.Arizmendi Bakery.
Solid sweets...scones, muffins, cookies...all simple, bucolic in a rustic chic, south of France way

.Tart to Tart.
More frilly, with pastries, tarts, and cakes, but still nothing really fancy. Cakes seem to be based on chinese recipes tweaked to taste more american (sweeter) and frosted to look american (dressier)

.Crepevine.
There's all the fruit crepes, but i'm always drawn to the showcase of cobblers. deliciously warm and topped with ice cream. mmm...i'm melting like ice cream thinking of it.

bakeries with puns for names: + 10 points!

I've realized...

I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.
